Question 9: Who is God?

Answer: God is a Spirit, & does not have a body like men.

SCRIPTURAL BASIS

  • John 4:24

  • 2 Corinthians 3:17

  • 1 Timothy 1:17

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

  1. God is not like us, but like us, He does have a personality. This means He is a person with thoughts, desires, and a will.

  2. But He is different from us in three key ways. These three ways are that He is:

    • Immaterial - He does not have a body.

    • Transcendent - He is not limited by space and time. He is present in all of creation throughout all time and yet He is not creation.

    • Self-Existent - God does not need anything or anyone to exist. He does not need food or water. He does not need oxygen. God is. The theological term for this is God’s aseity. God needs no one nor nothing to be.

  3. Why does this matter? Because God is a person we can know Him and talk to Him just like our friends. God has a will that He desires us to know and understand and He wants us to know Him and worship Him in Spirit and in truth.
